Orc Name Generator
Harsh, barkable orc names for warbands, half-orc PCs, and the NPCs who charge the gate.
Hit Generate to forge a result.
Orc names that survive a war cry
Orc names should sound like they were shouted across a ridge, not whispered in a moonlit glade. This generator stacks hard consonants, short compounds, and warband-ready endings so your character sheet reads like someone who breaks doors for a living.
Use it for full orcs, half-orc PCs who want the grit without soft vowels, raider captains, or the nameless horde that suddenly needs fifteen distinct fighters. Generate a batch, keep the keepers, and ignore anything that drifts toward elf territory. Want a clan sound locked in? Drop a fragment like "grak", "ug", or "tusk" in Include and the tool will weave it through regenerations.
Pair with the Dwarf Name Generator if your campaign pits mountain holds against warbands—the contrast sells the table. Bookmark Rollforge for mid-session panic when the party captures a scout and someone asks for a name before you invent "Orcy McOrcface."
Warband naming that actually helps
- Full orcs lean short and cluster-heavy (gr-, thr-, ug-, -gul, -fang). Half-orc PCs can keep the grit but drop the longest epithet endings if the table wants a softer borderland vibe.
- Reuse one stem across a warband—“Grak-”, “Ug-”, “Tusk”—so related fighters feel related without sharing a full name.
- Bark-test every keeper: if you cannot shout it across a ridge, regenerate. Soft vowel stacks belong on the elf page.
- Epithet endings (fang, skull, breaker) read well as war-names or titles; short endings (-ak, -ug, -osh) work better as everyday given names.
What the generator is doing
Each click assembles an orcish-flavored name from prefix, optional middle, and ending pools tuned for hard consonants and short compounds. The Include field injects your syllable into the assembly so a clan sound or warband motif can survive regeneration. Quantity is for shortlists: ten candidates beats one “perfect” roll you will second-guess when the scout gets captured.
FAQ
Does this work for half-orc characters too?
Yes. Keep punchy results for borderland half-orcs, or regenerate until you get a shorter stem without a long epithet ending. If you want a fully human-adjacent name, branch to the Random Name Generator and keep an orc nickname on the side.
How do I stock a whole warband quickly?
Set quantity to 10, lock a clan stem in Include (“grak”, “ug”, “tusk”), and assign roles afterward (raider, shaman, scout). Shared stem plus different endings reads as one culture without identical twins.
How is this different from the dwarf name generator?
Both favor hard consonants, but orc pools lean into warband grit and epithet endings (fang, maw, skull) while dwarf pools favor forge/clan density (heim, stone, anvil). Use dwarf for mountain holds; use orc for raiders and half-orc PCs.
Can I force a clan sound with Include?
Yes. Drop a fragment like “grak”, “thr”, or “tusk” in Include and regenerate. The tool weaves the stem into assemblies rather than filtering a fixed list—short stems fit more naturally than long phrases.
First names only, or clan names and epithets?
You get one assembled name per result. Short endings feel like given names; longer epithet suffixes can pass as war-names or titles. For a separate clan token, generate a second pass with a different Include motif.
