FAQ
Why name + quirk + motivation instead of a full backstory?
Because most NPCs get thirty seconds of spotlight. A playable quirk and a clear want beat three paragraphs nobody asked for. Expand only for recurring cast.
How do I turn a seed into a quest-giver?
Read the motivation as the quest pitch. “Recover a stolen heirloom” is already a hook—add a location and an obstacle, keep the quirk so the NPC is memorable while briefing the party.
Can Include change the quirk or motivation?
No. Include only influences the generated name. Quirks and motivations stay random so you still get surprise pairing.
What if the quirk and motivation clash hilariously?
Keep it. Contradiction is character—e.g. a cheerful moth-collector who needs to sabotage a wedding. Lean into the tension instead of regenerating toward bland coherence.
About this random npc generator
The party will talk to anyone. The cobbler. The crow. The guy sweeping the street who was supposed to be scenery. When that happens, you need more than a blank stare and "uh… Dave?"
This generator hands you a usable NPC seed: a name, one quirk to roleplay, and a motivation you can hang a hook on. Expand it if they stick around; discard it if they don't.
Want the name to include a sound your players already know? Use Include—try a family syllable or title fragment. Keep a few results in your notes before session. Future you, mid improv spiral, will send present you a thank-you note.
Improvisation fuel, not novels
Before session, generate three seeds for the district you expect the party to poke. In play, lead with the quirk (players remember the moth cage), hang the plot on the motivation (debt, heirloom, rival shop), and only expand backstory if they invite the NPC back. For families, Include a shared name syllable so siblings rhyme without identical sheets.
Anatomy of one NPC seed
- A name is assembled from fantasy-friendly name parts (Include only steers this piece).
- A quirk is drawn—something visible or behavioral you can roleplay in thirty seconds.
- A motivation is drawn—a want or pressure you can turn into a hook if the party engages.
