About this D&D coin calculator
Every group eventually hits the same snag: a mixed pile of coins and someone doing mental math while the table waits. Copper, silver, electrum, gold, platinum — the 5e ratios are simple once you know them, but converting mid-session is still a pain.
This calculator uses the Player’s Handbook rates (1 pp = 10 gp = 20 ep = 100 sp = 1,000 cp). Enter any mix and get a live gold total. Need to hand the pile out? Set the party size and split down to the copper piece, with leftovers called out so you can argue about “administrative fees” properly.
The interface is built for a phone in a DM’s hand: big inputs, a sticky total, and no tiny buttons. Pair with the Random Loot Generator when you know what the shiny nonsense is and still need to know how much coin it is.
How it works
- Type the number of each coin the party found (leave unused fields at zero). The sticky total updates live in gold pieces.
- Need the reverse? Enter a gold total and hit Convert — it breaks into platinum, gold, silver, and copper (electrum optional).
- Set party size and hit Split loot. Shares go down to the copper piece; any remainder is called out so you can decide who gets the extra.
- Everything runs in your browser. No account, and nothing is stored.
Tips for using it at the table
- Convert the whole hoard to a gold total first, then split. Cleaner than dividing each denomination by hand.
- Most tables ignore electrum. Leave that field at zero, and leave “Include electrum” unchecked unless the adventure hands it out.
- For very large treasures, let the converter push value into platinum so character-sheet numbers stay small.
- Keep the page open in a phone tab. Once loaded, the math runs locally — useful in basements and convention halls.
- Leftover copper after a split is free roleplay. Someone always wants the last few coins for “administrative fees.”
- If your table uses a different platinum or electrum rate, adjust the final numbers manually — copper/silver/gold 10:1 is nearly universal.
FAQ
What exchange rates does this use?
Official D&D 5e rates from the Player’s Handbook: 1 platinum = 10 gold, 1 gold = 2 electrum, 1 gold = 10 silver, 1 gold = 100 copper (so 1 pp = 10 gp = 20 ep = 100 sp = 1,000 cp).
Does it work for Pathfinder or other systems?
Most systems that use classic 10:1 copper → silver → gold ratios will match. Electrum and platinum can differ slightly by system — leave electrum at zero if yours does not use it.
Can I use this on my phone during a session?
Yes. Large inputs, a sticky total bar, and full-width buttons are meant for a DM pulling it up mid-loot or while haggling.
Why is electrum included?
Because 5e still lists it and some adventures hand it out. Leave the field at zero and skip “Include electrum” if your table does not use it.
How does the party splitter handle leftover copper?
It divides as evenly as possible down to the copper piece and shows any remainder. You decide who gets the extra coins.
Is any data saved or tracked?
No. Everything runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server for the calculation.
Can I convert to real-world money?
Not in this tool. Real-world comparisons vary wildly by edition and table economy. Keeping it pure game currency avoids the “is a gp $50 or $500?” argument.
